WORKSHOP: ENABLING EQUITABLE ACCESS TO HEALTH
EMBRACING NEW DESIGN TECHNOLOGIES
ABOUT THE ORGANISERS
The workshop has been organised by Dr Dominic Eggbeer at PDR, Cardiff Metropolitan University in the UK, Dr Kobus van der Walt and Prof. Yadroitsau from the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Free State, South Africa.
The CUT are hosting the workshop. Facilities at CUT includes the Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (CRPM). The CRPM was established 1997 as a centre for commercial work and research using Additive Manufacturing (AM), with a focus on medical products.
PDRs Surgical & Prosthetic Design (SPD) team have worked on the implementation of advanced computer aided design methods in healthcare since 1998. The SPD team undertakes collaborative international research, training and provides an ISO 13485 accredited implant design service.
WORKSHOP DETAILS
AIMS
Through a 4 day workshop, we will explore how 3d design and digital technologies can be used to improve access to state-of-the-art healthcare services in South Africa. Focus is on patient specific devices such as surgical implants, assistive technology, prosthetics and orthotics. We will:
Provide cross-disciplinary networking and development opportunities for early career researchers in the field of patient specific devices.
Define research questions that aim to improve outcomes for those requiring patient specific medical devices.
Stimulate the development of research projects between participants in the UK and SA.
Share best practice in the production of patient specific devices between researchers and clinicians in the UK and SA.
The workshop will be held from the 3rd-9th Dec. 2018.
ORGANISERS
Together with experienced research and technical staff, the workshop will be facilitated by Dr Dominic Eggbeer and Prof. Ihar Yadroitsau.
Dr Eggbeer is Head of Surgical & Prosthetic Design at PDR (International Centre for Design Research), Cardiff Metropolitan University. Dr Eggbeer has worked on the application of advanced design engineering technologies in personalised medical devices in collaboration with healthcare providers, industry, foundation organisations, charities and other teaching organisations since 2003.
Prof Yadroitsau is a Research Professor with over 30 years of academic experience in applied optics &laser technologies. He obtained his Master of Science in physics (optics and spectroscopy) in 1985 at the School of Optics/ Department of Physics/ Belarusian State University (Minsk). This was followed by a PhD in Material Science and Engineering from the Jean Monnet University (Saint-Etienne), France in 2008. The thesis title was “Direct manufacturing of 3D-objects by selective laser melting of metal powders.”
